EMMITSBURG, Md. (Sept. 3, 2010) - The Saint Francis men's cross country team opened up its 2010 season with a near-.500 showing at the Mount St. Mary's 5K Duals, going 2-3 against the field in Emmitsburg.Competing against some of the region's best competition, the Red Flash defeated Navy and host school Mount St. Mary's at the meet, winning by scores of 24-32 and 26-29, respectively. The Red Flash fell 50-15 to champion American, 33-24 to George Washington, and also to UMBC.
Senior harrier Tim Wertner (Chambersburg, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim), who took third overall at the 2009 Northeast Conference Cross Country Championships, was the highest placing finisher for the Red Flash. Wertner took 22nd overall at the race with a time of 16:17.11, and was followed just five spots later by sophomore Sean Kirby (Clarksville, Md./River Hill), who took second in the 3000m Steeplechase at the 2010 NEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Kirby completed the race in 16:24.19.
Third for the Red Flash and 29th overall was junior Zach Burns (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley), with a time of 16:33.87. After Burns was sophomore Chris Delaney (Leeper, Pa./Venango Catholic) with his time of 16:50.03, and Shaun Foley (Hamilton, N.J./Notre Dame) rounded out the top-five with a time of 16:58.22.
