Saint Francis University Science Outreach Center Offers Summer Academies for High School Students
The Saint Francis University Science Outreach Center is now accepting applications for two summer academies for high school students between their sophomore and senior years. Student participants will have the opportunity to explore science and engineering while earning college credit and experiencing life on campus. The programs are focused on science, engineering, mathematics, and technology-related fields. These programs are an excellent opportunity for students interested in pursuing a career in these fields to learn more about them.
The Saint Francis University Environmental Engineering Design Summer Academy is a week-long program from June 14-18, 2010, designed to provide an opportunity for talented high school students to experience engineering and the engineering design process. Students will have the opportunity to earn college credit while participating in fun, hands-on activities illustrating what it is like to be an engineer and the career opportunities available to them. The cost for the program is $400, and covers room and board, two college credits, and all course supplies and materials. Financial aid is available. Student participants are also eligible to receive a $4000 School of Sciences Scholarship to the University ($1000 per years for four years).
The Saint Francis University Science & the Art of Discovery Summer Academy is a week-long program from June 21-25, 2010. Students will have the opportunity to earn college credit while experiencing how scientific knowledge is gained and the process of conducting and communicating scientific investigations. Students will work in teams to complete an inquiry-based project and present their results. Program activities include classroom learning; hands-on environmental learning experiences unique to western Pennsylvania; research shadowing; and recreational activities guided by experienced resident assistants.
Cost for the program is $300, which covers room and board, 2 college credits, and all course materials. Student participants are eligible to receive a $4000 School of Sciences Scholarship to the University ($1000 per year for 4 years). This program is made possible by a grant from the National Science Foundation.
