Freshman Career Central Andrea H Picture

When I first came to Saint Francis I was planning on becoming a nurse, but found out early on that it wasn’t the right field for me. I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life, the one thing that I knew for a fact was that I wanted to make a difference in the lives of others and to help them in any way that I can. I heard about career services, while browsing through my email and decided to email them explaining my dilemma. I set up a meeting with Mrs. Julie Barris, who was so helpful; she had me take a strong inventory exam to see where my strengths and weaknesses were. When we sat down to discuss the results, it showed that I was very much so a “people person” and looked at my options. With a lot of guidance from my mother along with Mrs. Barris, I was able to figure out what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. As of now, I am looking at majoring in elementary education and possibly minoring in special education. If you are struggling with what to do with the rest of your life, the first step is to set up a meeting at career services, everyone is so nice and willing to help you in any way that they can. Just don’t sit back and watch your life pass you by, get out there and figure out what your purpose in life is. Thank You Career Services!  Andrea Hetmansky - Freshman 2011

Step One: Self-Assessment(take a look at your interests, values, personality and abilities) check out www.keirsey.com for an on-line assessment. For more in-depth self-awareness activities and "tests" attend one of our scheduled workshops or schedule an individual appointment with Career Services.

Step Two: Career Exploration (research careers/occupations/majors that meet your interests, values, personality and abilities).
check out  stats.bls.gov/oco/ocos038.htm, (an occupational outlook on-line handbook), www.careers.msn.com, (learn about various careers), www.onetcenter.org (various career resource/information linked to this site).

  • Other career gathering tips:
*Talk to someone (friend, relative, alumnus) in the occupation in which you're interested. Prepare a list of questions.
*Job Shadow a professional for a couple of hours or half-day. Observe, interact and inquire.
*Volunteer in the field to "experience" what the environment and occupation is like.

  • For more in-depth assistance stop by the Career Services Resource Center (302 Scotus) for career handouts, books, Chronicle Career Briefs, an occupations database), or a personal meeting with a career counselor.

Step Three: Action Plan(state your goals, choose a major) The career exploration and information gathering step continues. Remember to volunteer, intern, obtain a summer position related to your field of interest. Get involved with a club or organization - build your leadership skills.
